Click to see the pictures, silly! So Close But SoCal. Actually, Southern Cali isn't close to Chicago at all. There isn't a spot in the country that's more distant - roughly 2000 miles to be inexact. Add an 87 degree differential (-2 degrees [Chicago] + 85 degrees [San Diego] = 87 degrees for you math freaks) and it didn't take much convincin' for me to make the trip (OK, I had to go for work anyway). Various images from January.

Big Bird, You're Dead To Me And apparently you've also been written off in the minds of three little boys who've been just been introduced to a sexier, more talkative companion, Mr. Playstation 2. Various images from December: Chicago, San Francisco, St. Louis, and Orange County, California. And a leftover from Chile.

When Life Brings You Lemons make lemonade. When life spills a Dr. Pepper on your lens, make pictures through your airplane window of the runway lights, with the focus setting permanently stuck at about three feet. [Updated 12/30/05]

A New York Minute that lasted five and a half hours. A recent trip to Manhattan for business provided nearly a full day of exploration - guided by Gautam - that included Union Square, the Village, Tribeca, and Grand Central Station. No shortage of material in that city, for sure.

Again, And Again (And Again) A photograph captures a fraction of a second in time and preserves it forever. A multiple exposure photograph captures several moments in time, and creates a new reality altogether. Fortunately this is a simple operaton with the Holga. Just push the button again and again (and again.)

Subterrain. My affection for a city is in exact proportion to its ability to freak me out on a daily basis. Although Chicago is no NYC, the El train runs underground for a good portion of the Loop, and is frequented by enough eccentric characters to make it the best people-watching environment you'll ever spend $1.75 on. More to come.

Through These Images, I Strive to convey a vision of the duality of man. I seek to express a ... just kidding. I got that text by Googling "artist's statement"... they're all the same. The only thing I was striving to do was test a new lens.

I Don't Know Anything About Baseball but if I divide the number of photographs that made it to this post by the number of bad photographs I've made in the months since I last posted, my batting average is about .0075.

On July 1, August Began August James, that is. He weighed barely four and a half pounds, arrived a month early, and for several days he lived in a glass box designed to control his temperature.
Four months later:
big, loud, and very, very hungry.

Three Feet Isn't That Much but it makes a world of difference when you're composing a photograph. And when you're only two and a half feet tall. Somewhere in the Marin Headlands, San Francisco.

Assault With Battery? There's this little hidden dirt road that starts immediately before you set foot on the Golden Gate bridge. It leads to Battery Wallace, a series of WWI-era bunkers that were installed in 1918 and housed the massive artillery used for the defense of the entrance to the Bay. I'll spare you the history lesson, but if you walk over the bridge towards Sausalito, it's worth a trot up into the hills. Just plain creepy.

My Most Unsettling Still Life Photograph Ever The streets of San Francisco have long been a target-rich environment for photographers. This, however, is possibly the most disturbing photograph I've ever made there. My mind can't quite resolve what is going on--or more accurately, what exactly happened to bring these two unrelated objects within such close proximity. Chance? Intentional? One person, or two separate contributors? You be the judge. Don't say that I didn't warn you.

Megapixel Schmegapixel You won't find any buttons, levers, latches, switches, dials, cursors, menus or modes on this $1 puppy. In fact, you won't find any metal, either. Scored at a garage sale by my ever-lovin' father. It cost him more to send it than to buy it.
