Mess with LSD And You'll Go To Jail was the unspoken message from more than a thousand Chicago police Saturday. They meant Lake Shore Drive, of course, where three weeks ago a demonstration disrupted Chicago's main thoroughfare, and received national attention. Saturday's surreal show of civil containment reminded me of something I saw once.

A March In April to protest the war on Iraq brought two thousand people out on Saturday for a determined march through the city. Throughout the walk, the demonstrators were snugly encapsulated by a thick membrane of Chicago police officers [see above entry] outfitted in full riot gear, and carrying hip bags that were marked Chemical/Biological Kit. The objective was reached without incident.
